17/03/2013 Snetterton Track Day Trophy

Wendy Mortimer and son Martin racing in the Track Day Trophy at Snetterton

Suffolk based Mother and Son brought their BMW Mini Coper S home in fifth place overall and gained a trophy for third in class.

Wendy commented:  “we arrived to find we were racing in the top group B, and never thought we would be able to compete against the more powerful cars” Qualifying went well to put the duo on the grid in fifth position, in a field of 31 cars. Wendy raced the first twenty mins on a wet, and wind swept Snetterton circuit. After a quick pit stop to hand the Mini over to 27 year old Martin.

Wendy said “I made a good start in slippery conditions, but knew I had to keep pushing in case we had more rain” After finishing the final stage of the race, and bringing the car home 3rd in class, Martin said “we had a ten second lead over the fourth place 2012 Clio cup car, I managed to maintain the gap until the end. I concentrated on putting as many back markers between me and him as I could”. The Sudbury based driver said “I needed to give a little extra to keep us ahead of the field.” Wendy added, “We feel much more comfortable, the car is responding well and is competitive. We have a good season ahead of us.”

28/10/2012   Snetterton, Track Day Trophy

 *******************************************************************************

Wendy:- 'The weather was atrocious, very cold, very windy with rain and sleet, scary conditions for your first race. We had a wet set up which I did not like in testing, so was not looking forward to qualifying, but it went very well, we qualified 31st out of 41, and 3rd in class,  Our Race was not until the afternoon and I was getting more and more nervous as the day went on.
The race was delayed and it was getting dark and it was raining.

The start went well, going into the 1st corner was scary with 41 cars on the grid but we all made it round with no incidents. I settled into the race and I was feeling ok, pretty confident really. I was chasing down a Clio which was quick on the straights, but so slow in the corners. I was shouting at him to get a move on as I was right on his bumper in every corner!! I finally, much to everyone's amazement, decided I was going to take him around Corum. I was going to have to take him off line on an even wetter part of the track. The guys watched from the pitwall and when they saw me go wide they said they thought I was going to spin off, until they realised what I was going to do. Pat said it was a very Ballsy move, as I needed to slow very quickly for the sharp left hander but it went all according to plan. I could see the guys waving at me on the pit wall. Then we had a lot of oil on circuit and it was time for me to come in and hand over to Martin. It was almost dark by now so he had awfull conditions, but he had an excellent race, with some brilliant times in the conditions to bring us home with a 3rd in Class trophy, what a day, first Race Over!"

Martin:- "After watching mum have an excellent race it was my turn to take the wheel. The conditions were terrible and mum warned me about the oil on the circuit. Our pit stop went smoothly thanks to excellent timing by Paul at Advent Motorsport. On my first lap I took it easy to find where the grip was. I started to pick up the pace and this showed when I nearly spun a couple of times on the oil but managed to control the slide and continue. A couple of cars lost control in front of me. On the penultimate lap I set my fastest time of 2.51.3.  By now it was getting very dark and visablity was difficult but I brought the '3D Look' Mini Cooper home safely and collected the 3rd place trophy with mum. I have now completed my 6th race and can remove that novice cross!"

07/10/2012

Martin's take on his first Mini Challenge podium:

Roling start on pole position for Race 4  alongside Mike Phillips! I managed to hold 1st position for the first lap but Jono Brown managed to pick his way through the pack and passed me on lap 2. On lap 3 and 4 I was being hassled by Max Lever and accidently ran into him at Melbourne hairpin. Over the next couple of laps Max pulled a lead over me and Phillips was about a second behind me. I was very cautious towards the end especially at Redgate where I had spun in the previous 2 races. On the last lap when the JCW cars were lapping us and I had to slow down on the apex of Goddards, Phillips ran into me which gave me  the momentum down to the finish line. I am so thrilled of my first podium!

Brands Hatch Mini festival 16-17th June 2012

For this event a 2nd JCW Mini was added to the Team as Patrick Mortimer and Adrian Norman were joined by the 2006 Mini Cooper S Champion Freddy Nordstrom. Nordstrom who currently races in the Euro Racecar NASCAR series grabbed an opportunity to return to his roots.

Nordstrom said: " I only wanted to race to have some fun, I know the guys at the front have a lot of experience in these cars and I have never driven one before  this weekend, yet I would like to be able to challenge for a podium!"

Qualifying did not go to plan as  Nordstrom experienced set - up problems which had to be addressed . He qualified 11th but made a steady move forward by finishing 9th in race 1, 7th in race 2 and 4th in race 3.

Nordstrom said: "I am very happy with the outcome in race 3, given more time in the car  I am sure I can challenge the front runners for podiums"

Patrick Mortimer also made a steady progress over the week-end with lap times improving every time he went on- track. Patrick finished 9th in race 3 and was very happy as his best lap time was only 0.6 sec off the front man Smith.

Patrick said: " I have taken a big step forward this week-end  and I am happy with the results. I will continue working hard and hope there will be a few podiums this season"

Last but not least, Adrian too made a steady progress with improving lap times and positions.

Adrian said: " I am very happy and not only have I improved my racing skills over the week-end , I feel I have learnt a lot"

The next round will take place at Snetterton 30/6-1/7-12

 Cadwell Park  2-3rd June 2012

The Advent Motorsport pairing of Freddie Lee and James Manning helped make history at Cadwell Park last weekend as the superb Lincolnshire Circuit played host to the fourth round of the BRSCC Motorsport News Fiesta Junior Championship.
The new for 2012 Motorsport News Fiesta Junior series for the young 14 to 16 year old drivers made its maiden visit to the twisty and undulating Lincolnshire Wolds venue and received acclaim from the competitors with many voting it their favourite circuit so far.
Cadwell is a highly technical and demanding track with great changes in level and renowned for its narrow sinuous layout which suited the handling of the slick shod Fiesta ST150s. The weather for the weekend, however, demanded greater use of the grippy Dunlop wet tyres than the slicks as the races on Sunday were held in very wet conditions which all the drivers attacked with a maturity beyond their years.
The constraints of the circuit however did not take prisoners with a few of the drivers being involved in excursions over the testing on Friday and qualifying on Saturday.
James Manning in only his second ever car race meeting and just having turned fourteen years old found that the difficult approach to the Hairpin can bite in damp conditions and had an off that meant the Advent crew were kept busy on Saturday evening. After an excellent showing in pre event testing ten days before this was a timely reminder that one’s concentration can never drop and James approached the Sunday races in a positive way despite his exploits on Saturday.
Freddie Lee, meanwhile, was making a welcome return after having missed the previous event at Donington and with very little testing applied himself to the task of mastering Cadwell Park. With just six short test sessions to his credit on Sunday he attacked qualifying and was involved in a titanic three way battle for pole in the closing moments of practice.
Just .004 seconds separated the top three drivers with Freddie taking third and poised well for race one on Sunday.
Weather conditions for the early morning race on Sunday were far from ideal with standing water in many places around the track which prompted BRSCC officials to sensibly conduct two formation laps behind the Safety Car before the grid was formed and the real action commenced.
Freddie hooked up a good start and was challenging for the lead through the jostle of the first few corners and the promise of his strong qualifying performance looked set to be unleashed however fate intervened and by the time the field arrived at Mansfield corner for the first time an ABS sensor failure meant that for the rest of the race his progress was hamstrung and he could be only a distant observer as a really close fought race ensued at the front of the field providing the spectators with a cliff hanging finish.
James Manning overcame the dent to his confidence on Saturday to gain time and experience on the circuit and made positive progress through the race gaining valuable Championship points along the way. James’s mature approach to a difficult situation belied the fact that he is just starting in car racing and does not have the oval track racing experience of some of his immediate competitors.
Race two on Sunday saw the two Advent cars line up in fifth and seventh positions again with a distinctly wet flavour to the circuit conditions; as the red lights went out Freddie and James both made good starts with the former being caught up in a quartet of cars as they headed through Coppice and Charles for the first time. At the end of the first lap things had sorted themselves out a little with Freddie up to third and then claiming second somehow as they passed through the Hall Bends and Barn complex.
James was again gaining experience and raising his game throughout as he closed the gap to his immediate competitors and chased on hard through the murky conditions.
Having passed Liddell, who then retired, Freddie was in hot pursuit of former karting adversary Jack Mitchell but a touch of over enthusiasm at Charlies Out saw the Essex youngster make a dramatic save as his Fiesta ST ran down the grass at over 90mph. Scrabbling back onto the tarmac he made a dramatic recovery reeling in the rest of the field and snatching third place in a highly dramatic last lap where applying the techniques of short circuit racing he was able to ‘duck and dive’ past cars to gain yet another podium finish.
In the process Freddie set the fastest lap, now to be the lap record for the class, just under a second faster than all the other Junior cars and on a time that proved to be three quarters of a second faster than the quickest lap in the subsequent adult Fiesta ST race held in more favourable conditions later in the day.
James Manning completed the race in sixth position, again having gained experience and still further increasing his pace in trying conditions which was a hugely satisfying end to the weekend for him after the disappointment of the Saturday excursions. James will, undoubtedly be a real force to be reckoned with as the series moves on through the calendar in 2012.
The next round of the Motorsport News Fiesta ST Junior Championship will be held at Rockingham Circuit at the end of June and the Advent team are looking forward to another competitive outing

Another solid weekend for Team Scalextric

Castle Coombe 7/05/2012

Changeable weather favored the brave who gambled on slick tyres for race 1. Patrick who showed improvement on his lap times in qualifying started Race 1 with a spin but soon recovered and made his way past the slower cars, while Adrian Norman also made steady improvements and had some battles with the other club class cars.

Race 2 was dry and both drivers enjoyed a scrabble with their class rivals and made their way back to the finish line without much damage.

The next round takes place at Brands Hatch  on June 16-17th

After gaining some track knowledge behind the wheel of the Ford Fiesta Junior machine at Snetterton recently, youngster Freddie Lee headed to Silverstone for some Easter weekend action. Croft and Thomas succeed at Silverstone

26 March 2012

So with the start of a new season came a new challenge for Team Cream Slice. Despite racing with a familiar machine, David and Dan opted to switch series' for 2012. As qualifying for this opening round arrived the duo were all set to do battle against the four other Renault Clio's and solo Suzuki Cappucini in their class. A busy session saw Dan take the Class D pole position ahead of the opening race, setting the 18th overall fastest time in the process, whilst David qualified a strong fourth in class.

An eventful first race saw Team Cream Slice record a brace of strong results. A collision at the front of the class left the race wide open as Dan and David engaged in a thrilling battle behind. As the chequered flag fell Dan swept passed second in Class D and David in third.

Still fired up with adrenaline after race one, the pair were keen to get back out on track for the second outing. Another action packed encounter saw the twosome score another second and third place finish between them, giving them a positive start to their 2012 campaign.

After just one round Dan left Silverstone as Class D points leader on 38 points, with David right behind him on 34 points. Round two takes place at the challenging Cadwell Park circuit in Lincolnshire, on Saturday 13th May.
